The Northern California Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Foundation's King & Faith Series is happy to be the collaborative partner with the San Francisco Tabernacle Congregations (TCDC) in their 28th Lenten Tabernacle.
The San Francisco Lenten Tabernacle is a city-wide, interdenominational event, featuring seven Thursday gatherings, beginning March 3rd. The 28th Lenten Tabernacle takes as a general focus Martin Luther King, Jr. and Fear. What does Dr. King say about fear, and how can we think about those thoughts today?
Executive director Aaron Grizzell will host five virtual sessions featuring leading theologians on the subject of fear. The five virtual events will be surrounded by two in-person services.
The NorcalMLK Foundation will host the virtual sessions in Zoom webinar format and live-streamed on its YouTube channel.
- Each virtual session will begin live each Lenten Thursday (March 10 - April 14) at 7:00pm pst.

People can register and ask questions of the speaker during each session.
- Seventy-five (75) registration spaces are available for each session.
- Those wishing to view each session, without registering, can log on to the live stream on YouTube.
March 3
The Opening of the Lenten Tabernacle (in-person service) at San Francisco's True Hope Church will help to center attendees' focus on the disciplines of Lent.
March 10
The King & Fear Virtual Seminar Series, session one, takes a look at what Martin Luther King, Jr. says about fear.
In the first virtual session’s theme, “King and Fear,” host Aaron Grizzell welcomes featured guest Rev. Dr. James McCray, Jr., D.Min., executive director, the Tabernacle Community Development and adjunct at San Anselmo's San Francisco Theological Seminary (recently merged with University of Redlands) in the D.Min. program, teaching courses on "Pastor as Person" and "Preaching in the Public Square."
Dr. McCray's presentation focuses on overcoming the fear-saturated environment, taking as a text the canonical Gospel of Luke 2:10.

March 17
The King & Fear Virtual Seminar Series, session two, takes a look at Martin Luther King, Jr.’s message in the Atlantic World.
In the second virtual session’s theme, “Fear: King's Message in the Atlantic World,” Aaron Grizzell, executive director of the Northern California Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Foundation discusses a seldom reviewed aspect of Dr. King's sacred experience and its unique connection to the trauma of Middle Passage and the emergence of the modern world.

March 24
The King & Fear Virtual Seminar Series, session three, takes a look at fear in the context of the Church in Black Lives Matter Times.
In the third virtual session’s theme, “Fear: The Church in Black Lives Matter Times,” host Aaron Grizzell welcomes featured guest Rev. Dr. Valerie Miles-Tribble, Ph.D. D.Min., professor of ministerial leadership and practical theology at the Graduate Theological Union and the Berkeley School of Theology. Dr. Miles-Tribble is also interim sr. minister at Faith Presbyterian Church in North Oakland. Her latest book, Change Agent Church in Black Lives Matter Times: Urgency for Action (Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefield), "examines tensions in ecclesiology and public theology, focusing on theoethical dilemmas that complicate churches’ public justice witness as prophetic change agents."

March 31
The King & Fear Virtual Seminar Series, session four, takes a look at what Martin Luther King, Jr. says about fear and the Beloved Community.
In the fifth virtual session’s theme, “Fear and the Beloved Community,” host Aaron Grizzell welcomes featured guest Rev. Dr. Dorsey Odell Blake, D.Min., presiding minister, Church for the Fellowship of All Peoples and faculty associate of Leadership and Social Transformation, Pacific School of Religion. Dr. Blake is the sr. minister of the historic San Francisco church co-founded by 20th century theologian Howard Thurman, a mentor to King. He has been a leading scholar and thinker on King and Thurman as a professor and public theologian for over four decades.

April 7
The King & Fear Virtual Seminar Series, session five, takes a look at fear in the context of the cross and the lynching tree, the title of the eponymous work of the late Dr. James Hal Cone.
In the fifth virtual session’s theme, “Fear: The Cross and the Lynching Tree,” host Aaron Grizzell welcomes featured guest Dr. Dwight N. Hopkins, Ph.D., Ph.D., the Alexander Campbell Professor, University of Chicago. Dr. Hopkins is a world renowned scholar and the leading thinker on the subject of Black Liberation Theology, with over twenty books authored and edited. He is the principal student of the late James Hal Cone, author of The Cross and the Lynching Tree (Maryknoll, NY: Orbis Books).

April 14
Maundy Thursday service (in-person) at San Francisco’s Bethel AME Church takes a look at fear and the future.
The theme: “Fear and the Future” is brought by feature preacher, Rev. Dr. Sakena Young-Scaggs, Ph.D., the sr. associate dean of Religious and Spiritual Life and pastor of Memorial Church, Stanford University.
