Dr. Joi Carr is Professor of English and Film at Pepperdine University’s Seaver College, where she also serves as Blanche E. Seaver Professor of Humanities and Teacher Education, Director of Film, and Academic Director of the Institute for Entertainment, Media and Sports.
Her interdisciplinary scholarship spans literature, film studies, theatre, religion, history, law, dispute resolution, African studies, and women’s and gender studies. She holds a PhD in English, Literature, and Film Studies from Claremont Graduate University, along with graduate degrees in interdisciplinary studies, religion, legal studies, and dispute resolution. Carr’s research and creative work focus especially on Black women’s voice, vocation, cinema, performance, multicultural theatre, and the cultural politics of representation. Her books include Boyz N the Hood: Shifting Hollywood Terrain, Encountering Texts, and forthcoming works on Black women and cinematic voice. She is also an accomplished playwright, director, vocal arranger, performer, and producer whose work bridges academic inquiry and public cultural engagement. Her honors include Pepperdine’s Blanche E. Seaver Professorship, awards for diversity and inclusive excellence, teaching excellence, and multiple vocal music awards.
